Over the last two years, TSG has posted multiple times regarding differences between the OpenContent Management Suite, the Alfresco Application Development Framework and Alfresco Share. While all approaches interact with the Alfresco repository, there are some subtle differences to consider. This post will share a summary of our previous posts for those looking at Alfresco interface options.
OpenContent Management Suite (OCMS), ADF and Share – Summary of Previous Posts
Back in 2018, TSG posted on comparisons of Share and OCMS. At the time, we thought:
Overall, Share is a good collaboration interface for Alfresco with Sites to handle security and user group separation similar to SharePoint. However, as the amount of ECM complexity and governance increases, many clients start to look at alternative or custom interfaces including solutions like OpenContent Management Suite.
With most clients are moving away from Share, the Alfresco Application Development Framework as well as the OpenContent Management Suite are good possible alternatives. Check out all our Application Development Framework Posts. Some highlights included:
- Search, Folder and Contributor – Individual posts included comparison of the ADF Sample Application to OCMS for Search, Folder and Contributor functions.
- Developer Posts – Individual posts for Building a Search Interface, No Code versus Low Code environment as well as ADF and OpenContent – REST Web Services comparisons.
OpenAnnotate Connectivity
As OpenAnnotate is a separate product from the OpenContent Management Suite, we have featured specific options for both ADF and Share (OpenAnnotate directly integrates with the OpenContent Management Suite)
- Alfresco 6 Annotations – Adding OpenAnnotate to the Application Development FrameWork
- Web Annotations – Support for Alfresco Share with OpenAnnotate
Summary
While most Alfresco clients are moving away from Share, options will include low code developer alternatives like the Application Development Framework, direct development on Alfresco REST or Opencontent REST APIs or no code interfaces like the OpenContent Management Suite. TSG is always happy to work with clients on evaluating which alternative best fits their usage and specific requirements.
