Why give away source code to clients rather than charge for it like traditional commercial software?
TSG has developed software as add-ons to Documentum for over 10 years. Many of our offerings, including the Active Wizard, were initially available as commercially purchased software. In working with clients, we found that the traditional pricing models for software were difficult for us and often got in the way of helping clients build out solutions. In 2005 we began working with Alfresco, an Open Source alternative to Documentum. We were impressed with their speed of implementation and product development, and hoped to achieve similar levels of service with our products, so we released them as Open Source in 2006. In response to an ever-changing ECM landscape, we have tweaked our approach somewhat to a TSG User License Agreement for our clients. The Open and Visible Source models have allowed us to focus on services, while continuing to enhance our software with a wider user base.
What benefit does this provide for TSG and potential clients?
We believe a Visible Source approach benefits TSG as well as Enterprise Content Management customers. TSG believes that providing our applications freely to our clients will enable us to:
- Develop better products through working closely with our clients to ensure we’re adding the right functionality to meet real world needs
- Evolve our products and allow our clients to leverage functionality enhancements that other clients have added in the past
- Promote the TSG brand by giving away great software
- Protect the integrity of our software programs by restricting the repackaging of code
Can I start with TSG’s code, change the name and release it as my own software product?
No. Per our license agreement, our code remains copyrighted.
Can I download the source from GitHub or SourceForge?
No. TSG wants to make sure you are successful in implementing our products. To get access to the source as well as binaries configured for your specific implementation and environment, please contact us.
Previously TSG allowed everyone to download products. Why is that no longer available?
From 2006-2015, TSG allowed anyone to download previous releases, typically one or two releases old, from our website. Starting in August 2015, TSG moved to a Visible Source model. TSG wants to ensure that clients are accessing the latest and greatest codebase and are successful in implementing our products. Read more about our new product support model on the TSG blog.
