OpenContentURL makes it easy for end-users to generate dynamic permanent links to documents that are stored in a content management system (i.e. Documentum, Alfresco) or portal. It reduces or eliminates the problem of out of date links to documents in web sites, training material, and references throughout an organization.

OpenContentURL: Enabling Integration and Linking Between Systems

OpenContentURL is a configurable and modular product providing the capability to create permanent links to ECM documents using document attributes. Originally developed by Technology Services Group (TSG) for a client who needed a link from SharePoint to go to either Documentum or a portal depending on a rule the product is designed with configuration and flexibility in mind.

OpenContentURL is like a traffic cop. It accepts an incoming URL link, parses the parameters passed on the link and uses them, as well as its configured rules, to build a new URL link and redirect the user to the system that will use the parameters to find and display a document. In essence, OpenContentURL allows a user to create a permanent link to a document by specifying specific metadata or control values for the document. The metadata and control values are put on a URL link and used to locate the specific document identified in a search using the values from a link.

An OpenContentURL deployment consists of three components, a source link generator, a target link resolver, and an XML configuration file for handling the linking rules.

Key Features

  • Generate permanent links across multiple ECM systems - Currently supported with: Webtop (source and target) & HPI (target)
  • Share permanent links across multiple electronic mediums - Email, Company/User controlled portals, or other ECM systems
  • Links created with OpenContentURL are valid for the entire life of the document - Generated links will always point back to the current approved content, even if re-versioned or re-approved
