The Problem:

Many ECM organizations use a tool such as InputAccel or Kofax for scanning. While these solutions are great for high volume bulk scanning and centralized scanning models, they can be expensive and overly complex for simple decentralized scanning needs.

The Solution: OpenCapture

OpenCapture provides a configurable web-based approach that allows users to easily scan and upload documents directly into a content repository. A simple interface provides intuitive user controls for scanning documents, performing image manipulations such as rotations and crops, and setting metadata. Available metadata fields for document indexing can be configured based on the document type.

Additionally, connectors are available for the user to launch OpenCapture directly from Documentum Webtop and Alfresco Share. The connectors detect the user’s current folder location and automatically upload content to this location. Once the scanning process is complete, the user can return right back to the view from which OpenCapture was initially launched.

How it works - Under the Hood

OpenCapture is a web application based on the Spring MVC web architecture. The following tools are also used:

  • OpenContent Web Services – Isolates OpenCapture from the CMS repository. OpenContent allows the tool to work against both Documentum and Alfresco. Users do not see a difference in the application functionality or layout.

  • Dynamsoft Dynamic Web TWAIN – ActiveX control that drives the scanner and performs image manipulations. Learn more about Dynamic Web TWAIN.
