In August, Gartner released the 2016 ratings for Cloud Infrastructure as a Service. As we posted last month , with the news early this year that EMC is looking to sell Documentum, clients that used to be looking at Documentum hosting offerings from EMC are now considering other, better, alternatives including industry leading Amazon Web Services. This post will present the latest thoughts from Gartner.

Last month’s TSG post described the reasons for considering Amazon over EMC/VMWare as well as presented some of the technical details and costs of an AWS/Documentum implementation. In regards to Gartner’s latest report, specific cautions in regards to VMWare included:
vCloud Air has limited appeal to the business managers and application development leaders who are typically the key decision makers for cloud IaaS sourcing. VMware administrators in IT operations are the most likely champions of vCloud Air within a business, but they often prefer to build internal solutions, and they are also often the people that the business is trying to bypass by going to cloud IaaS. Furthermore, while VMware does have a strong channel in its broader business, the vCloud Air channel is not robust; SIs, MSPs and value-added resellers need to learn to sell vCloud Air effectively and deliver value on top.
From a look at the Magic Quadrant of rankings, Amazon continues to dominate in the leader quadrant with VMWare falling significantly out of the leader Visionary Quadrant to the low-end of the Niche Market.
It should be noted that Veeva, a common Documentum alternative in the Life Sciences space, uses NTT Com, another laggard in the Niche market space.
Summary
As we posted last month, when looking at Documentum in the Cloud, compared to VMWare, Amazon provides:
- A market leading solution that continues to grow at a rapid pace to dominate the cloud infrastructure space
- More capabilities at roughly half the cost
- A better long-term decision
The only clients we see considering VMWare for Documentum are clients that are heavily leveraging EMC/Documentum Consulting or Solutions. The significant fall by VMWare as well as other vendors makes this market continue to drive toward Amazon, Microsoft with Google having an outside chance as other vendors continue to fade.
