One of our clients is upgrading this fall to 6.5 and was disappointed that EMC Documentum Captiva has yet to support LightWeight SysObjects (LWSO) and how that is affecting his plans. In our discussions, the client has considerable content stored as images and documents that he would like to leverage LWSO to reduce the database size as well as improve performance.
As we brainstormed his solution, the client determined that it was probably not necessary to be concerned about Captiva plans either short or long-term in regards to LWSO. Part of the solution needed to move the current content to LWSO. The client is planning on leveraging OpenMigrate to move current content. Rather than set up one process for current objects and Captiva for images only, the client decided to leverage only one weekly/nightly job with OpenMigrate to move images, word or other content to LWSO in a batch job. This approach is similar to old imaging solutions that would migrate content from magnetic to cheaper optical disc in the off-hours. By leveraging OpenMigrate, the client could develop plans to move content based on specific rules including:
- Content is an Image (Captiva) and will not be annotated
- Content has no versions and was stored more than 1 month ago
- Content is an email and will not be versioned

Hi,
Our project could potentially have very similar requirements – i.e. images scanned by Captiva will need to be stored as Light Weight Sysobjects using the High Volume ingestion server.
Can OpenMigrate import content directly into the repository as LWSO?
Does Captiva still not support Light weight sysobjects or is this post true of a particular Captiva version?

With High Volume ingestion server – does EMC provide any particular client for high volume ingestion or the standard client apps like Captiva Documentum Export have to support the Light Weight sysobjects?

@Paras, the current OpenMigrate Documentum target can be extended to add LWSO support; we’ve successfully prototyped it to do so. It’s a bit more complex than simply using a different DFC call, but is still a nice fit for OpenMigrate.
Captiva version 6 does not support LWSO; I’m unclear when that product will add support, or how.

Hi Paras,
Regarding your Captiva question, it looks like there is now a patch available for the InputAccel version 6.x Advanced Documentum Export module which allows for export of objects as LWSOs.
There is a Support Note (ID esg105836) on EMC Powerlink with more info and instructions on how to obtain the patch from IA Support.

Thanks for this information Jonathan,
I will check out the support note
